Were you kissing her…?

“I’ll always deny that I kissed her.
I was just whispering into her mouth”.

Natural Selection

March 14, 2009

The gradual but inexorable magic
That turned the dinosaurs into the birds
Had no overt, only a hidden, logic.
To start the squadrons climbing from the herds
No wand was ever waved, but afterwards
Those who believed there must have been a wizard
Said the whole show looked too well-planned for hazard.

And so it does, in retrospect. Such clever
Transitions, intricate beyond belief!
The little lobsters, in their mating fever,
Assaulted from the sea, stormed up the cliff,
And swept inland as scorpions. But if
Some weapons freak equipped their tails for murder
He must have thought sheer anguish all in order.

Source of all good and hence of evil, pleasure
And hence of pain, he is, or else they are,
Without a moral sense that we can measure,
And thus without a mind. Better by far
To stand in awe of blind chance than to fear
A conscious mechanism of mutation
Bringing its fine intentions to fruition

Without a qualm about collateral horror.
The peacock and the tapeworm both make sense.
Nobody calls the ugly one an error.
But when a child is born to pain intense
Enough to drive its family all at once
To weep blood, an intelligent designer
Looks like a torture garden’s beaming owner.

No, give it up. The world demands our wonder
Solely because no feeling brain conceived
The thumb that holds the bamboo for the panda.
Creation, if the thing’s to be believed —
And only through belief can life be loved —
Must do without that helping hand from Heaven.
Forget it, lest it never be forgiven.

The City

March 14, 2009

You said: I will go to some other place, some other sea,
find another city better than this one.

Every move I make is doomed to come out wrong
and my heart, like something dead, lies buried inside me.
How long is my mind to wither away like this?
Wherever I turn, wherever I look,
I see the black ruin of my life, here,
where I have spent so many years- wasted, destroyed them

You will not find some other place, some other sea.
The city will follow you. And you will walk
the same streets, grow old in the same neighborhood,
in these same houses watch yourself turn gray.
You will always end up in this city. Do not look for things

there is no ship for you, no road out.
Just as you have ruined your life here, in this small corner,
you have destroyed it now everywhere in the world.

Thought for the day

You carry
All the ingredients
To turn your life into a nightmare–
Don’t mix them!

The Israeli ambassador to Ireland has explained the death toll figures for Palestinians during the recent bombardment of Gaza were wrong.

He says:“The numbers are based on Hamas sources and, obviously, they are biased. A report now says that two-thirds of the Gaza dead were either Hamas fighters or connected to Hamas.”

I wonder which report that is? It wouldn’t be Israeli sponsored by any chance?

The ambassador said he didn’t understand calls for a boycott of Israeli products in Ireland and said such action would lose Irish jobs.

I really don’t understand the calls – especially from some in the trade unions here – for a boycott. I thought their job is to promote the creation of more jobs here. A boycott would lead to many Irish jobs being lost. This would only exacerbate an already bad economic climate.”

Well, that’s telling ’em, I guess.
