There are no beautiful clocks. Everything to do with time is hideous.

Hijack world history…

February 25, 2015

I want to hijack world history with you.
I want to kill monarchs
and infiltrate theocracies
and assault state capitols
and set the captives free.
I want to be the prophet enacting your high-strategy will,
The favored, faithful first general of your imperial army.
The sage philosopher turning hearts towards you,
towards us.
Oh darling, let’s be kings, I’m a killer in a crown.
Let’s build monuments so great God takes notice of us,
lets hide from His sight in a tangle of silken bedsheets
and toast to our infamy with goblets beaten from stolen gold.
Let our names be feared and revered and let us taste eternity
unwary of the cost.
They say this is love but I know it’s self-immolation,
the ignition of electricity between us.
So let us adorn ourselves with smoke and flame
drip blood rubies and pile up devotees like toy soldiers,
let us dance, darling, on the ash and sing
‘our kingdom come, our will be done,
in thee as it is in me.

Spiritual decline…

February 25, 2015

The spiritual decline of the earth has progressed so far that peoples are in danger of losing their last spiritual strength; the strength that makes it possible even to see the decline (which is meant in relation to the fate of Being) and to appraise it as such. This simple observation has nothing to do with cultural pessimism – nor with any optimism either, of course; for the darkening of the world, the flight of the gods, the destruction of the earth, the reduction of human beings to a mass, the hatred and mistrust of anything creative and free has already reached such proportions throughout the whole earth that such childish categories as pessimism and optimism have long become laughable

Hard to hate…

And it’s hard to hate someone once you understand them.

People to be loved….

February 25, 2015

People were created to be loved. Things were created to be used. The reason the world is in chaos is because things are being loved and people are being used.

His very existence was improbable, inexplicable, and altogether bewildering. He was an insoluble problem. It was inconceivable how he had existed, how he had succeeded in getting so far, how he had managed to remain — why he did not instantly disappear. ‘I went a little farther,’ he said, ‘then a little farther — till I had gone so far that I don’t know how I’ll ever get back.

On writing…

February 25, 2015

I’m not a writer who tells you something five times. I usually say it just once, and if I say it any more in a first draft, my editor makes me take it out in a rewrite anyway. That’s one of the reasons that my books are sometimes shorter than other people’s. And that’s one of the reasons why I wish some people would read more slowly. Books are patient; you can afford to take your time when you’re reading for pleasure.
