New SOCA spin
May 13, 2009
The Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca), that semi-quango of the police world, brain child of Tony Blair and the Home Office, which described its creation as “the biggest shake-up of the way British policing is organised since force boundaries in England and Wales were re-drawn 40 years ago”, has claimed it has single-handedly driven drug prices to an all time low.
SOCA proudly boasted prices per kilo had jumped 25% since this time last year as a result of undercover work and seizure operations – strangely they appear to have overlooked the simple fact that since July 2008, the Pound has fallen by around 25% against the Dollar and Euro. Oh dear. Perhaps someone needs to invest in a new calculator?
SOCA has cost the poor beleaguered taxpayer £400 million per year. It has always been controversial. And of course it’s totally failed to halt the spread of organised crime within the UK.
Time for a rethink, perhaps. We could save ourselves £400 million per year – which could be spent providing every MP in the land with the part-time services of a good accountant?
